  1. Create a new user or listing “input” in Tangram or choose an existing one.
  2. Create a new user or listing “directory” in Tangram that you want to add the filter to.
  3. Add the input as a filter in “Settings” > “Directories” > Select a directory > “Filters” > “+ Add A Filter”

Step 1: Create An Input

In order to add a filter to a directory you will first need to create an input (to later turn into a filter). An input can either be a “user” or “listing” input.

For example, a “user input” may be something like “Industry” (e.g. “Technology”, “Hospitality”, "Beauty/Wellness”, etc.) where the user can select what industries they have experience in from a dropdown.

How to create this “Industry” user input in Tangram:
  1. Navigate to “Settings” > “Roles” > Select the role you want to apply the input to
  1. Click “+ New” in the top right and choose “Select Field”. A select field appears as a multiple choice dropdown to the user when filling out this field.
Note: Only select fields can be turned into filters as of the date this blog was posted.
  1. Name the input something that will be clear to the user who will be filling out this info when they sign up for your app.
Note: You only need to enable "option grouping" if you want to sort the values in the select field into sub-categories.
  1. Click “Edit”
  1. Add the options that will show up in the multiple choice select menu for this input

An example of a “listing input” may be something like “Service Type” (e.g. “Sales”, “Marketing”, “Product”, etc.) where the service provider can specify what categories a service listing belongs to.

How to create this “Skills” listing input in Tangram:
  1. Navigate to “Settings” > “Roles” > “Listing Types” > Select the listing type you want to create the input for > “Inputs”
Note: You only need to enable option grouping if you want to sort the values in the select field into sub-categories.
  1. Click “Edit”
  1. Add the options that will show up in the multiple choice select menu to tag listings of this type whenever this type of user creates one.

Step 2: Create A Directory

A directory is a search page for either users or listings as shown below.

Example of a user directory (Tile View)

Example of a listing directory (Tile View)

To create a new directory navigate it “Settings” > “Directories” > “+ New”

  1. Name the directory (e.g. Service Provider Directory)
  2. Determine what it’s contents should be (aka what types of users should show up) and it’s layout (e.g. tile view).
  1. Decide what filters should show up on this directory

Step 3: Add Filter To Directory

Now that you have the input that you want users to be able to filter your directory by, all you need to do is add the input as a filter.

To do so navigate to “Settings” > “Directories” > Select your directory > “Filters” > “+ Add Filter” > Select the input

Make sure to add the directory to the navigation menus of whichever user roles you want to be able to access it in their Tangram account. You can do so by navigating to “Settings” > “Roles” > Select the role you want to add the directory to > “Navigation” > “New” > “Choose Templated Link” > Select the directory > Save
